"Oh, thank you! I had such a wonderful time, Uncle Mark," Elle said as she fairly bounced on the leather seat cushions of the Rolls as her uncle drove out the long driveway. "Thank you. Although you scared me when I ran down the stairs and didn't see the car."

"They don't allow any cars in there unless the person being picked up is in view. But I told them you'd be first out, and I was allowed to park where I could pull right up. Happy Birthday!"

"A very happy birthday, and you made it all happen."

"I'm glad I could do it for you."

She leaned back against the seat and sighed. "So am I. But I didn't think you drove at night, any longer."

"I don't, but that's mainly because of the blinding headlights. Not many cars, this time of night. Makes it easy for me."

She leaned forward and held her feet off the floor. "Look. I lost a shoe. I wonder when?"

"Just before you got to the car. I saw it fall off. But your masked pursuer was too close behind you for us to get it. Who was he?"

"I don't know. Maybe a masked ball isn't such a great idea, after all. I have no idea whom I just spent the last few hours with, the most delightful hours I've ever had."

She closed her eyes, picturing the garden they had been in, re-living the moments of pure joy. He had seemed so handsome, even though she couldn't see his face. So kind.

Who was he? Would she ever see him again? And if she did, would she recognize him? She swayed in her seat, humming one of the waltz tunes.

Uncle Mark slowed down to let a dog cross the street. "You should have stayed for the unmasking. It's going to haunt you, not knowing who the young man was that you met."

"You know I couldn't. Carlotta was looking daggers at me as soon as most of the men started to dance with me. Then she entered the garden I had been dancing in just as they were ready to do the unmasking. I had to leave before she found out."

"She wanted them dancing with Loretta and Lynette, not you. Those young ladies have been so spoiled that they have a perpetual pout. I doubt if they know how to smile any longer. Men would be wise to steer clear of them."

They pulled up at the hotel. Earlier that day Mark had given her a second key, so Elle ran inside, up to the room and changed back into her stable attire. She hung up her dress, dropped her plastic shoe on the floor, and came back down.

They drove the short mile to the arena, and into the parking lot reserved for participants in the Hunt. Most of the people were at the ball, and the lot was almost empty.

"You don't have to stay, Uncle Mark," she said.

"You need to sleep."

"I don't know if I can. I'm so excited."

"Then I'll keep you company.
